Painted on location allows an artist to capture the fleeting light and atmospheric mood of the landscape. Working outdoors the challenge is to respond to the shifting elements - light, color, shadow and weather; giving the painting a sense of immediacy and presence that is harder to capture in a studio setting. Plein air painting is as much about the experience of being in the environment as it is about the final image. These oil paintings are primarily scenes on Vancouver Island. Some of then have been fine tuned in the studio, allowing for better control of light.
